Wendy Katokra; representing Repulse Bay, Nunavut and Canada. It’s been my 4th week here in Africa with Northern Youth Abroad 2010 International phase. We are volunteering at BOFWA building a parking garage and at WAR building a play ground for children. Just 2 more weeks till we leave the country to go back to Canada. It has been hard living with people I didn’t know and at times I wasn’t sure I was going to make it but I still enjoy being around them and have created some good friendships along the way.
I do my laundry with my hands which isn’t my thing and was never in my list and probably never will be again after I leave Africa. And we have a healthy lifestyle here too. Not to drink a can of coke for the week and allowed to drink or eat junk food only on weekends. That will absolutely not be on my list too when I get back home.
We’ve been going out of Maun every weekend and have amazing weekends since we got here. I, myself don’t really enjoy my time during the days ‘cause I’m not an outdoor person. But last weekend we were in Moremi and spent 2 days outside in game reserve which was pretty awesome. 3 out of 5 seeing the big five here in Africa. And saw a lot of animals that I’ve never seen plus I slept right where all the animals are. Getting up in the morning was so great to know that I was still alive. That will be a great story to tell my family and friends. I also enjoyed my time in Ghanzi and learned about San people and how they have some traditional ways of life and what their traditional dance is like.
People here in Botswana are so welcoming and thankful that we are here to work with two different organizations. This trip I took will be in my thoughts and often think about how life is like here. I have only 2 more weeks to live here and I’m sure it will be good and I don’t know where the last 4 weeks went. How time goes by so fast. And in the blink of an eye I will be home to see my baby, to tell him how my trip went and what I’ve done here. There will be many different stories that I can tell him now. Not just stories but what I’ve seen with my eyes and what I did while spending my time here in Botswana.
First time I thought of Africa, I didn’t think how developed it was going to be. But all they need is washing machine. Over all I’m please that I came here. And I thank NYA for giving me this opportunity.
