July 20-27, 2010
Hello,
My name is Donovan Nagyougalik from Baker Lake, Nunavut. I did my Canadian Phase in 2009.
My placement is in Shakawe, Botswana. The second week in the daycare was pretty awesome. We painted the daycare with ABC’s and 123’s, with a really big snake on the wall and the months of the year and the days of the week. Sam painted the most beautiful flower and it just lights up the room with happy thoughts. We painted 3 rooms in 5 days. Sam and I painted the whole dinner room and the room where we sleep in and the rest of the group painted the room where all the ABC’s and 123’s were.
At the end of the week of painting we had the opportunity to take an adventure. We got up extra early and started driving east through the Caprivi Strip in Namibia to Toro Safari Lodge back in Kasane, Botswana. The second day we traveled into Zimbabwe and went straight to Victoria Falls, where we saw waterfalls that made Niagara falls look like a baby. At the end of the trail there’s this bridge that connects Zambia and Zimbabwe which people go bungee jumping off of.
Back at camp in Kasane, we had this awesome cook (Anthony) that made the best dinner of my summer and he guided two famous soccer players David Villa and Santos. In Gaborone we were watching the world cup game Spain vs. Netherlands and Spain won 1 to 0 and then Julian got mad because the Netherlands lost the world cup.
The third day was spent in Chobe National Park. We saw elephants, crocodiles, birds, giraffe, buffalos, antelopes, impalas and other stuff. We tried to look for lions but we didn’t find any. That evening we went on a boat cruise. We saw an elephant push sand on a crocodile that was in his way. The crocodile ran away and almost went into the boat because we were too close to the shore when that happened. Our only bad experience with the boat cruise was that our guide was too afraid to go near the hippos, for the fear of flipping over the boat and somehow swallow one of us. So that was our trip to Kasane/Chobe/Vic Falls, I had an awesome trip overall. I loved the animals we saw and the nights by the fire were unforgettable times.
